SYNECDOCHE

                                                            SYNECDOCHE

It is a figure in which the name of one thing is substituted for that of another with which it is intimately associated .Prof.Bain defines it as 'a figure by which a post of thing is put for the whole ,or the whole for the part, the species for the genus ,or the genus for the species, the name of the material for the thing made.

In the example'The factory needs four hands more ',by hands we mean men or workers .Here one thing 'hands'is used for another (men). And the relation between the two things (men and hands)is very intimate,i.e.one thing can not be separated from the other without causing injury to it.

The main characteristics of synecdoche are given bellow:

1)One thing is named but another thing is meant.

2)The relation between the two things is quite close.
